Frankfurt am Main is the financial center of Germany and one of the main centers in Europe. Its airport is one of the busiest, and it’s a city that you surely need to visit. Germany was on my bucket list for a very long time, and after years I was able to visit it. Even if the whole trip was a bit hectic I really enjoyed it.

I went to Frankfurt because my sister and one of my family’s friends had to attend a kpop festival there. Maybe we started to organize the trip a bit late, but it was really hard to find accommodation and a way to get there. I’m pretty sure that it was hard to find accommodation due the festival, everything was booked out. Even Airbnbs were all booked out. While for the transportation, we didn’t want to pay a lot for it so we found reasonable prices with Flixbus.

In this blog post I want to share with you 6 incredible places that you have to visit while you’re in Frankfurt, Germany. Most of them are pretty close to each other, so you can visit everything just by walking.

Römerberg

The first place that you must visit is Frankfurt Römer where you can find the Römerberg. Römerberg is the main square of the city and it was completely rebuilt after its destruction during WWII. The reconstruction followed the original structure. I tell you that once you’re in the middle of the square, you’ll feel like standing in a different world. They use this historical place for the Christmas markets, coronations and many more other events. All around Römerberg there are typical shops where you can buy souvenirs or taste traditional dishes.

Eiserner Steg

The city of Frankfurt am Main is divided between the old and the new part by the river Main.
To connect these two parts there are different bridges that are different from one another.
The Eiserner Steg is an iron footbridge from where you can have a stunning view over the city. Compared to the other bridges, this one has always a lot of people crossing it. Eiserner Steg was blown away during WWII and then fully renovated in 1993. I can’t tell you when is the best time to have a walk on it, because I feel like the view it’s different each hour of the day.

Maintower

The Maintower is a skyscraper in Frankfurt, and its name comes from the river’s name, Main, that flows in the middle of the city. This building is 200 meters high with  40 meters of communication tower.

The tower has two observation platforms from where you can enjoy Frankfurt’s skyline. To be able to go on the 56th floor and observe the city from above, you have to pay the ticket – the cost is €9.

Alte Oper

The Alte Oper, is a Opera House that opened back in 1880 but then destroyed in 1944. It was rebuilt in the ‘70 and opened again in 1981. The square in front of the building is known as Opernplatz.

Many important plays were performed here and now it is used as a concert hall. Alte Oper is situated in the inner city, Innenstadt, within the banking district Bankenviertel.

Palmengarten

Palmengarten is a place that you should definitely add to your list if you’re planning to visit Frankfurt. It’s the botanical garden of the city, and it has a lot of entertaining things to do inside.

The entrance fee is €7 and you can visit the whole park if you’d like to. It has 13,000 tropical and subtropical plants, arranged in the open air or in greenhouses based on the typology. There is also a rose garden with 50 different types of roses.

This amazing garden has many different parts, with lots of different plans coming from every corner of the world. My friends and I were looking for some plants from Madagascar, our motherland, and we found them in the tropical area.

Walk along the Main

On both sides along the Main River there are promenade areas, where you can have a relaxing walk with the beautiful view of the city. There are also many green areas where you can rest, spend time with your friends or family or where you can have a picnic. If you want to have a typical German taste, then there are also different restaurants along the river where you can enjoy your meal.

Those are 6 places that I really enjoyed while staying in Frankfurt, there are other things that can be added. Frankfurt is a place where new and old meet, and it’s perfect if you’re just passing by there or you don’t have much time to spend there.
